Foster families: first-aid and CPR standards

Being a foster family in Peru means offering a temporary, protective home to a child or teenager separated from their family of origin. The process includes a suitability assessment and prior training; being ready to respond to an emergency — with current first-aid and CPR training — is part of that preparation.

The first-aid requirement

In Peru, family fostering is governed by Ley N.° 30162 and administered by the Ministerio de la Mujer y Poblaciones Vulnerables (MIMP) through its Dirección de Protección Especial. To join the Banco de Familias Acogedoras a household must be assessed favourably and complete the training the MIMP provides. No rule expressly requires a first-aid certificate, but holding current first-aid and CPR training is commonly expected as part of preparing a safe home for the daily care of a minor.

The foster family is supported and supervised by the MIMP's interdisciplinary team. A first-aid and CPR certificate is in addition to — not a replacement for — the suitability assessment and the caregiving skills the programme requires, and it should be kept current.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
